תיאור

כתובה מעוטרת ומעוצבת בצורה מרהיבה, מקהיר, מתוארכת ל-16 באפריל 1821 (י"ד בניסן ה'תקפ"א), עבור (בנימין) חי דיין בן דוד דיין ומזל טוב בת יהודה דיין. ככל הנראה בני הזוג היו בני דודים מצד האב. שמו המלא של החתן מופיע בחתימתו כצד מסכים, אך אינו מופיע בגוף הכתובה עצמה. המסמך גזור בצורת כיפה, ובראשו עיטור המתאר ציפורים, עצים ומבנה, ומעליהם שמש ועין. הכלה והחתן מצוירים יושבים יחד בחדר אחד ואוחזים ידיים. שולי המסמך מעוטרים בשנים-עשר מזלות גלגל המזלות, ונושאים את הפסוק מרות ד, יא: "יתן יהוה את האשה הבאה אל ביתך כרחל וכלאה". בצד השני (verso): רשימת חשבונות שאינה קשורה לכתובה. ברשימה מוזכרים סוגי מטבעות שונים, והופעת המטבע "מחמודיה" בשורה הראשונה מעידה על כך שסביר להניח כי הרשימה נכתבה לאחר תחילת שלטונו של הסולטאן מחמוד השני בשנת 1808. סימן כרונולוגי זה מסתבר גם לאור אזכורם באותה רשימה של מטבעות "יוזליק" עות'מאניים, שהחלו להיטבע בשנת 1789.

Princeton Geniza Project description: Ketubba, beautifully illuminated, from Cairo, dated 16 April 1821 CE (14 Nisan 5581 AM) for (Benyamīn) Ḥayy Dayyān b. David Dayyān and Mazal Ṭov bt. Yehuda Dayyān. The couple are likely paternal cousins. The groom's full name appears within his signature as a consenting party but not within the ketubba itself. The document is cut in the shape of a dome, with a heading depicting birds, trees, and a building structure overseen by a sun and an eye. The bride and groom sit in one room, holding hands. The border of the document is decorated with the twelve signs of the zodiac and bears the verse Ruth 4:11: יתן יהוה את האשה הבאה אלביתך כרחל וכלאה. (MCD with information from CUDL). Verso: An unrelated list of accounts appears on the verso of this ketubba. A variety of coinage types are mentioned and the appearance of Maḥmūdīya in line 1 points to the likelihood that the list was recorded following the onset of Sultan Maḥmūd II's reign in 1808. This chronological marker is plausible because Ottoman yüzlük coinage is mentioned in the same list, which was first minted in 1789. MCD.
