Princeton Geniza Project description: Legal document. Location: Cairo. Dated: 19 Ḥeshvan 1498 Seleucid = 3 November 1186 CE. The betrothal of the orphan girl Sitt al-Muʿazzaza bat Šela b. Obadiah to the Aleppan Abū l-Fatḥ Petaḥya b. Yeshuʿa. Dated: Ḥeshvan. Signed by Shelomo b. Zakkay and Yefet b. Shela. Verso: addendum, dated Ṭevet 1499 of the Seleucid Era (= 1187—88) in Cairo. Dispute between an engaged couple that was caused by a postponement of the marriage. According to the engagement agreement the groom should have paid a fine to his bride, orphaned from her father, in case the marriage will be delayed because of him, as was common in many pre-nuptial agreements in the Geniza. In addition, the groom did not pay all of the required marriage expenses. The matter was brought before the court and a new marriage date was agreed upon – in two months time. The groom agreed to pay a fine of 10 dinars in case this new marriage date will not be upheld. In the other side of the deed, one reads of how the matter developed: the marriage did not take place in the new date, and the groom had to pay the agreed upon fine. On her part, the bride agreed to give up half of the fine, and testified to the court that the groom gave her five and a half dinars. The bride released the groom from any obligation he had towards her. Ashur assumes that after that the groom gave the bride a bill of divorce.
