Princeton Geniza Project description: Legal record (#6) in a court register/pinqas from a Rabbanite beit din in Cairo (spanning ff. 2r-3r of BL OR 6356). In Hebrew. Location: Cairo. Dated: 22 Shevat 5443 AM, which is 1683 CE. Folio 2r: (Document #6) Inheritance settlement following the death of Shemuʾel ha-Levi Porekh. The pinqas entry is extensive, spanning multiple folios. Shemuʾel was predeceased by his wife ʿAzīza bt. Rabbi Yaʿaqov Abushaʿra (אבושערה). The couple left behind five sons: Elʿazar, Yehuda, Ḥabīb, Avraham, and Yosef (and possibly daughters who were not recipients of inheritance shares). The inheritance is extremely detailed but, in broad strokes, after paying for their father's burial expenses and settling his debts, the remainder of the inheritance is split into six shares–with two shares designated for Elʿazar. The only movable wealth that is not divided are three Torah scrolls and two sets of silver Torah finials (rimonīm)–all of which Elʿazar receives. The family's residential properties on Darb al-Ḥumṣānī are divided equally among the five brothers. The family's houses on Darb David ha-Kohen are designated solely for Elʿazar. Much of this folio's lower lines deals with management of specific property shares among the brothers. Folio 2v: (Document #6 contd.) The five brothers swear a "solemn oath on the B[lessed] N[ame]" that they will not transfer ownership of any property within their parents' inheritance to any third party. The entry includes an exhaustive list of exclusionary clauses for the types of property transfer that the brothers are barred from. Line 18 specifies that some of the brothers' inheritance also includes "clothing" and other possessions that their father Shemuʾel's previously "bought from the estate of" a certain Raḥamīm Arukh. The word "לונדרא" appears in connection with Raḥamīm Arukh, possibly connecting his death, residence, and/or possessions to London, England (where Jews had recently been readmitted in 1656). For a similar spelling of the potential placename "לונדרה", see: JRL SERIES C 88 (PGPID 31938). Folio 3r: (Document #6 contd.) The final lines of this inheritance case deal with the ha-Levi Porekh brothers' commitment to support an orphan in Venice, by the name of Qīyūn Yaqar/קיון יקר (both uncommon Jewish names in geniza documents). The surname is likely from the Semitic root י-ק-ר "dear/precious" in Hebrew, but the language of origin for Qīyūn is unclear. The 5,700 medin designated for supporting the orphan is dually supported by a ḥujja that was issued by a qadi court The scribe and second witness of this entry is listed as Shelomo Somekh. MCD.
