Princeton Geniza Project description: Deed of sale for multiple properties in Cairo, explaining how they exchanged hands in a complex succession of guardianship procedures, inheritance, and a widow's ketubba payout. Location: Cairo, "Darb Castro" (Castro Street). Dated: Middle third of Kislev 5520 AM, which is 1759 CE. The properties mentioned in the opening lines once belonged to Yiṣḥaq aka Shaḥata Siqil (סיקיל) who was the guardian/apotropos for the orphans of Yiṣḥaq Mor Ḥayīm. After Yiṣḥaq aka Shaḥata Siqil died, the properties passed under the ownership of his son Avraham, then to his daughter-in-law Vida (Avraham Siqil's wife) when she was widowed, and finally to her three heirs: Yiṣḥaq Ben-Ṣahal, Avraham Majoro, and Yaʿaqov aka Yāqūtī ha-Kohen. Two of the heirs, Ben-Ṣahal and Majoro, are Vida's nephews by her own siblings. The core purpose for this deed is to record the sale of the properties by the three heirs to Ḥayyīm b. Yosef Yeshiʿa for 240 reales abūṭaqa (ll. 36-37). The deed cites several other documents related to the guardianship procedures , property transfer, and Vida's ketubba payout. Line 9, specifically, mentions Shelomo Zarḥya as a "shaliaḥ beit din" and witness for one of the documents, which helps to contextualize his appearance on multiple early 18th-century legal documents (e.g. PGPID 7396; PGPID 30597) .The lowest signature at the bottom of the deed is that of R. Nissim al-Gāzī and the stamped seal bears his full name. Rabbi Nissim Shelomo al-Gāzī (1670-1761 CE) was a communal leader among the Rabbanite congregations of Cairo during the mid-eighteenth century. ASE/MCD.
