מכתב מסוחר הודו, השוהה בעיידאב, אל בני משפחתו או שותפיו, ככל הנראה בפוסטאט. לפי גויטיין, "אל-אסעד הוא חוכר המכס בעיידאב. הוא מקבל 5 דינרים כדמי מכס ועובדיו (ע'למאן) דינר אחד. מכתבי המלצה נשלחו אליו באמצעות השולח. אך הוא נהג בנימוס עוד לפני שראה את המכתבים." ואולם, ייתכן שעדיף לפרש את המסמך בכך שאל-אסעד הוא שותף עסקי או שותף מסחרי. פירוש זה יסביר מדוע אל-אסעד עצמו לא היה זה שטיפל בסידור הניירת (שהיה בדרך כלל תפקידו של הצ'אמן), וכן את תלונתו של השולח על כך שלקח סכום זהה לזה שלקחו האצחאב.
Princeton Geniza Project description: IB VII, 43. Letter from an India trader, in ʿAydhāb, to his family or colleagues, presumably in Fustat. Goitein comments that "al-Asʿad is the tax farmer of the customs in ʿAydhāb. He receives 5 dinars customs duties and his employees (ghilmān) 1 dinar. Letters of recommendations were sent to him with the sender. But he behaved nicely even before he had seen the letters." But the document might be better interpreted with al-Asʿad as a business associate or trading partner. This would explain why al-Asʿad himself wasn't the one getting the paperwork in order (this was normally the job of the ḍāmin), and also the sender's complaint that he took as much as the aṣḥāb. MR
