מכתב מאדם בשם יעקב, ככל הנראה מלוסנה, אל חלפון בן נתנאל הלוי בקורדובה. יעקב, שאינו ידוע ממקורות אחרים, כותב בעניין מחלוקת בינו לבין חלפון בנוגע למקורות של פסיקה הלכתית — האם יש לפנות ישירות לתלמוד או להסתמך על הגאונים. המכתב כולל גם התקפות אישיות (ad hominem). יעקב ביקש להביא את הסכסוך לבוררות בפני אבן מיגאש ויהונתן בן גיאת. הכתב דהוי וקשה לפענוח, ובנוסף לכך ניכרים הקשיים הרגילים של עמימות בעניינים המוכרים היטב לשולח ולנמען. Princeton Geniza Project description: IB IV, 44 (ח46). Letter from a certain Yaʿaqov, probably in Lucena, to Ḥalfon b. Netanʾel ha-Levi, in Cordoba. Yaʿaqov, who is otherwise unknown, writes regarding a dispute with Ḥalfon over the sources of a halakhic ruling, whether one should refer back to the talmud directly or to the geʾonim. Also includes ad hominem attacks. Yaʿaqov sought to bring the dispute to arbitration before Ibn Migash and Yehonatan Ibn Ghiyāth. Faded and difficult to decipher, in addition the usual problems of vagueness on matters well-known to both sender and recipient. (Information from Friedman and Goitein, India Book vol. 4).
