תיאור

מכתב מאת חלפון בן נתנאל הלוי, ששהה בברוץ' שבצפון-מערב הודו, ככל הנראה אל מצ'מון בן חסן/יפת באדן. תאריך: 1134 לסה"נ. הנמען מכונה "ראיס" (נשיא), וכפי ששיער גויטיין, ניתן להניח שמדובר במצ'מון בן חסן, ראש יהודי תימן ונציג הסוחרים שם. חלק מן העסקים כבר סודרו באדן, "במושבו" של הנמען ובנוכחותו. הכותב מדווח כי שהה בהודו שנה שנייה, ומציין כי הוא שולח משלוח גדול של בדים לאדן באמצעות ברכאת בן מוסא אלחלבי. בעבר זוהה השולח בטעות כיצחק בן מח'לוף אלנפוסי, אולי משום שהערות גויטיין הצמודות למסמך כוללות רשימותיו על בני משפחת אלנפוסי. בצד האחורי של המסמך מופיעים חשבונות מסחריים שלא פוענחו ברובם, הנוגעים למשלוחי משי, כתובים בכתב ערבי ובספרות יווניות/קופטיות. כן מופיע במסמך מקטע טקסט נפרד שאינו קשור לעניין, ובו מתכוני רפואות בכתב ערבי.

Princeton Geniza Project description: IB VI, 27 (ח18). Letter from Ḥalfon b. Netanʾel ha-Levi, in Bharuch, northwest India, probably to Maḍmūn b. Ḥasan/Yefet, in Aden. Dating: 1134 CE. The addressee is a dignitary referred to as 'rayyis,' and as Goitein surmised, it can be assumed that the recipient is Maḍmūn b. Ḥasan, the head of the Jews of Yemen and the representative of the merchants there. Some of the business was already arranged in Aden, 'in his seat' and in his presence. The writer reports that he stayed in India for a second year. He is sending a large shipment of fabrics to Aden with Barakāt b. Mūsā al-Ḥalabi. (Information from Goitein and Friedman, India Book IV.) The sender was previously identified on PGP as Yiṣḥaq b. Makhlūf al-Nafūsī, maybe because Goitein's attached notes contain his jottings about the Nafūsī family members. On verso there are largely undeciphered mercantile accounts involving shipments of silk in Arabic script and Greek/Coptic numerals. There is also an unrelated block of text containing medical prescriptions in Arabic script.
