מכתב בקשת צדקה הממוען לנגיד שמואל בן חנניה ולשלושת בניו. השולח מספר כי בעבר היה עשיר וכעת ירד מנכסיו. משכורתו עומדת על 1.25 דרהם בלבד ליום, והוא מתקשה לשלם את מס הגולגולת ו/או מסים אחרים ("נטלו ממני 20 דינרים בשנתיים האחרונות"). הוא מונה אנשים שונים שסייעו לו בעבר: אבו סעד אבן אלמצמודי נתן לו 2 דינרים עבורו ועבור בנו בשנה שעברה; הדיין אבו נצר נתן לו דינר תמורת בגד עַרְצִ'י ששוויו אינו עולה על דרהם בלבד; בנו של אבו אלמנא, שהשולח היה חייב לו תמורת מי ורדים, אף הוא נתן לו משהו; אבו זכרי אלתלמיד, אברהם אלעכאוי, ויוסף הגר בזקאק אלקנאדיל — כל אחד מהם נתן לו חצי דינר. השולח שמע על כפר סמוך למניית זפתא השייך לנאצר אלדין, אשר תושביו פטורים מתשלום מס הגולגולת, והוא מפנטז על מעבר לשם ועל אי שיבה לעולם לפוסטאט. בינתיים הוא נזקק בדחיפות לדינר אחד מהנמען ובניו. גויטיין מוסיף הערה: "היעדרותו מפוסטאט לא תועיל לו כל עוד לא סגר את חשבונו. לאחר ה'תע'ליק' (סגירת החשבון), איש לא יטרח עוד בעניינו." Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter of appeal for charity addressed to the Nagid Shemuel b. Ḥananya and his three sons. The sender reports that he had been rich and is now poor. His salary is only 1.25 dirhams a day and he struggles to pay his capitation and/or other taxes ("they have taken 20 dinars from me over the last 2 years"). He lists various people who have helped him in the past: Abū Saʿd Ibn al-Maṣmūdī gave him 2 dinars for him and his son last year; the judge Abū Naṣr gave him a dinar for an ʿarḍī garment worth only a dirham; the son of Abū l-Munā whom the sender owed for the price of rose water also gave him something; Abū Zikrī al-Talmid, Ibrāhīm al-ʿAkkāwī, and Yosef who lives in in zuqāq al-qanādīl all gave him a half dinar. He has heard that there is a village near Minyat Zifta belonging to Nāṣir al-Dīn whose inhabitants have to pay no capitation tax, and he's fantasizing about moving there and never coming back to Fustat. In the meantime he urgently needs 1 dinar from the addressee and his sons. Goitein adds, "For his absence from Fustat will be of no avail as long as he has not closed his account.
