Princeton Geniza Project description: IB II, 67. Letter from Madmun b. David (Hebrew name Shemarya) to a man referred to by his titles (al-Muwaffaq, Amīn (al-Dawla), al-Saʿīd). Aden, 1202. Maḍmun reports on the murder of al-Malik al-Muʿizz, who had claimed to be caliph, and the ascension of al-Malik al-Nāṣir Ayyūb as the new caliph. He refers to the celebration of the Feast of Weeks (Pentecost / Shavuot) "in the proper way," a statement that would be unnecessary under normal circumstances and might therefore imply a period of temporary defection from Judaism under the previous ruler. With the ascension of the new caliph, the Jews paid the poll tax, seemingly reinstating them to their status as Jews, and excusing them from a penalty for apostatizing from Islam. In the right margin (in a different hand) are references to salvation for the Jews in the form of the new ruler — relief coming first to those in the mountains and then to Aden. The letter also mentions the recipient's trouble with a shipment of pepper. The recipient is addressed by the titles al-Muwaffaq ('the Successful'), al-Amīn (al-Dawla) ('Trustee (of the Government)'), and al-Saʿīd ('the Auspicious'). He might have been a dignitary, such as a Jewish representative of merchants. (Information from Goitein and Friedman, India Traders, 513–514). Recto is a calendar for the years 1207–1212 CE in a different hand. (Information from CUDL)
