תיאור

עצומה אל הח'ליפה אלמסתנצר בעניין הפילוג שהתחולל בשנים 1038–1042 בין שלמה בן יהודה, גאון ארץ ישראל, לבין נתן בן אברהם, מתחרה על הגאונות. זוהי טיוטה הכתובה בכתב יד ערבי צפוף של אפרים בן שמריה. במסמך מוזכר נתן בן אברהם, אשר "הגיע מן המערב, תובע את משרת ראש ישיבתנו, ואשר עומד בראש ישיבה זו זה 16 שנים", וכן האמיר מנג'ז אלדולה, ו"עבד אדוננו, דאוד בן אסחאק". המחלוקת נסבה על ההנהגה של ישיבת ארץ ישראל בין שלמה בן יהודה לבין נתן בן אברהם. ככל הנראה, קהילת בית הכנסת של בני ארץ ישראל שנסגר הייתה נאמנה לשלמה בן יהודה, ונתן בן אברהם ניצל את קשריו בשלטון כדי לגרום לסגירת בית הכנסת. שאר העמוד מלא בטיוטות של מסמכים משפטיים, הכתובים בכתב היד העברי של אפרים בן שמריה. תיארוך: ינואר 1039. זיהוי כתב היד הערבי: מרינה רוסטוב. על אותה פרשה ראו מסמכים נוספים שפורסמו אצל שטרן (1969) ובמהדורה מחודשת אצל גיל ("ארץ ישראל") כתעודה 197, והמסמך הראשון פורסם מחדש גם אצל ח'אן. יצוין כי הצירוף שדווח עם קטע אחר הוא צירוף שגוי.

Princeton Geniza Project description: Petition to the caliph al-Mustansir concerning the schism of 1038–42 between Shelomo b. Yehuda, the gaʾon of Palestine, and a pretender to the gaonate, Natan b. Avraham. This is a draft written in the cramped Arabic script of Efrayim b. Shemarya. Mentions Nathan b. Abraham, who ‘arrived from the West, claiming the position of the head of our Academy, and who has been head of this Academy for 16 years’, the amir Munjiz al-Dawla, and the ‘slave of our master, Daʾūd b. Ishaq’. The situation concerns the leadership dispute between Shelomo b. Yehuda and Nathan b. Abraham over the leadership of the Palestinian Academy. The congregation of the closed Palestinian synagogue had apparently been loyal to Shelomo b. Yehuda, and Nathan b. Abraham had used his contacts in the government to have the synagogue closed. FGP lists via the CUL-GRU that the fragment is a join with T-S 13J8.2, but the join is false (Rustow has reported this to FGP).
