Princeton Geniza Project description: Fragment from the bottom of a legal document written on parchment. Dated Ṣafar 261 AH = November/December 874 CE. This is therefore the oldest Arabic document in the Geniza and likely the oldest dated document in any language in the Geniza. Most of what is preserved consists of people's names. From l. 8 onward (and possibly beginning earlier in this fragment), all of the names are followed by the witness formula وكتب شهادته, in some cases written as a ligature (وكتبـشهادته). Requires further study.
