Princeton Geniza Project description: Three consecutive entries on the same fragment, related to a property sold by the Jewish community of Cairo in the early 15th century. The fragment was in the possession of the Mosseri family, and a copy of it was brought to Jacob Mann, who published the two Judeo-Arabic entries from it in his book Texts and Studies (vol. I, pp. 432-3). The fragment was probably included later in the newly established Jewish Community of Cairo's archive, which was catalogued by Yisrael Ben-Ze'ev in the 1930's. It was probably Ben-Ze'ev who made a photocopy of it, which came with his private archive to the Central Archive for the History of the Jewish People, today a part of the National Library of Israel, where it can be found under the shelfmark CAHJP ET-Ca. 25. The current whereabouts of the original document are not known. The first entry is torn at the top, where at least ten lines of flowery Hebrew mention the authority of "the great nagid David", son of Yehoshua. The text then switches to Judeo-Arabic to describe how the community was in need of money to pay some debts, and so the community heads signed below sold a third of an endowed property known by Elia, to the physician David b. Ya'aqūb, for 7000 dirhem. This was enough to pay the debts as well as buy an alternative ruined property behind the synagogue. The boundaries of the sold plot are described – from the south the road which leads to the ḥammām and the suwayqa, and the darb qaḍīb; from the north a house known by Ibn Irāqī; from the east the road (darb) in which it is located, and three of its gates; from the west it opens to the alley (zuqāq) Ibn Ghādī and its fourth, secret gate. No date preserved. Seven persons signed. To this Judeo-Arabic deed there is a confirmation, added on its right-hand margins, which Mann only saw as "illegible scribble". Thanks to the Arabic text (see below), it is clear that this is a confirmation written by none other than the nagid David, under whose authority the deed was written. The second entry is again in Judeo-Arabic, is written perpendicular to the main text. It is dated to the 15th of Shevat 1720 Sel. (31.1.1409 CE). The signed persons attest that they had received back from the said David the items pawned with him (probably until the completion of the transaction). This entry was therefore written a few days after the first text, which is dated (according to the third, Arabic translation) to the first ten days of that month (and see Ashtor, History of the Jews in Egypt and Syria, vol. II, pp. 27-8). Eight persons are signed – six of the seven who sigen the first transaction, and two new ones. The third entry, in the lower half of the page, is in Arabic script, and declares itself to be a translation of the Hebrew (ʿIbrānī) text on top (line 2). In the third line the date of the first entry is cited as the first ten days of Shevat 1720 Sel., which helps us dating the original, first entry. Then the text describes the events mentioned in the first entry: the debt, the sale of the the third of the endowed property known by the shaykh Elia (here called Elia al-mutatabib b. shemu'el) to the physician David b. Ya'aqūb (b. Muhaddab), the payment of the debt, and the purchase of a property behind the synagogue (lines 6-7). The boundaries of the property are described in lines 10-14, and the Arabic text adds that the name of the alley in the eastern side, from which one enters the property, is darb Rāʾiḍ, which is of importance since the location of this street is not known today. Then the names of the community elders who authorized this are mentioned, following the order of the signatures of the original text, but transforming the Hebrew names into their Arabic equivalents (i.e. Yeshūʿah=Faraj, Peraḥya=Surūr). Those signed also attest that they recognize the hand writing of "their head, David" on the margins of the original deed (line 17). This document is dated to 4th of Shaʿabān 825 AH (24.7.1422 CE).
