טיוטת מכתב, ככל הנראה מאת אפרים בן שמריה, ככל הנראה אל הגאון הארץ-ישראלי שלמה בן יהודה. (הזיהויים נעשו על פי ברקת.) בערבית-יהודית. השולח מתגונן מפני האשמות שהוא מועל בכספי הציבור ומנהל התכתבות עם ראשי הגלויות וראשי הישיבות בעיראק, ובהם האיי גאון, מתפאר במכתביהם אליו ומעניק להם כבוד רב יותר מזה שהוא מעניק לישיבות ארץ ישראל. הוא עומד על כך שאינו מתכתב עמם — הוא קיבל רק מכתב יחיד מראש הגולה ושלח מכתב יחיד להאיי. הוא מכחיש גם שפנה להאיי בשאלה על אכילת בשר לאחר התענית (כנראה כוונתו לתשעה באב). הוא מזכיר בשמותיהם אנשים אחרים מן הקהילה המצרית. בסיום המכתב הוא משתמש בלשונות של הכנעה רבה ומתחנן שלא להאמין בדברי ההשמצה ולפיהם הוא מכבד מישהו יותר מאשר את הגאון הארץ-ישראלי ואת ישיבת ארץ ישראל. הערה: כתב היד הוא דף גדול ויחיד של נייר במידות 44 ס"מ על 46 ס"מ, ובו שבעה גושי טקסט נבדלים. מקום הימצאו כיום אינו ידוע, אך הוא פורסם על ידי שוואב בשנת 1920 (ככל הנראה ללא תצלום). Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter draft probably from Efrayim b. Shemarya probably to the Palestinian Gaon Shelomo b. Yehuda. (Identifications are according to Bareket.) In Judaeo-Arabic. The sender defends himself against the accusations that he embezzles communal funds and corresponds with the exilarchs and the heads of the Iraqi yeshivas, including Hayya Gaon, glorifying himself with their letters to him and paying them more respect than he does to the Palestinian yeshivot. He insists that he he does not correspond with them—he just received a single letter from the exilarch and sent a single letter to Hayya. He also denies that he asked Hayya about eating meat after the fast (probably referring to the 9th of Av). He mentions various other people from the Egyptian community by name. He concludes with expressions of great deference and pleas not to believe the slander that he honors anyone more than he honors the Palestinian Gaon and the Palestinian yeshiva. The letter is missing it's top, and occupies the upper half of recto side. NB: The Reinach Geniza manuscript is a single, large sheet of paper measuring 44cm x 46cm and containing 7 distinct blocks of text.
