תיאור

מכתב מאישה — אשתו של יהושע אללאד'קי ואמו של דוסא בן יהושע — היושבת ברקה (אלרקה), אל בנה דוסא בן יהושע בפוסטאט. המכתב כתוב ביהודית-ערבית, והכתובת על גביו רשומה בכתב ערבי. בכתובת מזוהה השולח גם כסהל בן חאתם, ומכיוון שהאם מציינת שהיא מתגוררת עם בתה, סביר להניח שסהל בן חאתם הוא חתנה. היא מביעה את געגועיה: "אני כותבת לך, בני, היקר לי מכל האדם, יאריך אלוהים את ימיך ויקיים את מעלתך ואת עזרתו לך ואת אושרך ושלומך, וירעיף עליך חסד רב, מן הבית ברקה, ביום חמישי, כ"א באב [=אוגוסט]. בריאה אני; יזכה אותך אלוהים ברחמיו בבריאות עד עולם. עייפתי, בני, מלכתוב אליך בלי לקבל תשובה, ואינני יודעת מדוע אתה מזלזל בקשרי המשפחה שלך. מאחיך, ישמרו אלוהים, מגיעים מכתבים כל העת, אך אין ביניהם אפילו מכתב אחד ממך. והרי אתם נמצאים באותו המקום. האינך יודע שכאשר מגיע מכתב ממך, זה כאילו אני רואה את פניך? האינך יודע שלבי כמה לקבל ידיעות ממך? מה קל יותר מלכתוב מכתב ולהקל על דעתי? אל תמית אותי בטרם עת. [...] כל שאני מבקשת ממך הוא לכתוב לי מכתב מפעם לפעם, כדי שאדע שאתה בריא." Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter from a woman who was the wife of Yehoshuaʿ al-Lādhiqī and the mother of Dosa b. Yehoshuaʿ, in al-Raqqa, to her son Dosa b. Yehoshuaʿ, in Fustat. In Judaeo-Arabic with the address in Arabic script. The address also identifies the sender as Sahl b. Ḥātim. Given that she states she is living with her daughter, Sahl b. Ḥātim is likely her son-in-law. She conveys her yearnings, "I am writing to you, my son, the dearest to me of all people, may God grant you length of days and perpetuate your eminence and His help to you and your happiness and your wellbeing and may He bestow much favor upon you, from the house in Raqqa, on Thursday, 21 Av [=August]. I am healthy; may God in His mercy grant you everlasting health. I have grown tired, my son, of writing you without receiving an answer, and I do not know why you make light of your family ties. From your brother, may God protect him, letters arrive all the time, but there is not a single letter from you among them. Yet you are in the same place. Don’t you know that when a letter comes from you, it is as if I see your face? Don’t you know that my heart yearns to receive news from you? What could be easier than writing a letter and easing my mind? Do not kill me before my time. [...] All I ask of you is to write me a letter from time to time, so that I will know you are healthy." She also asks him to buy her certain items, including Isfahani kohl; tutty, both Indian and Marāzībī'; and a sky-blue veil (muʿayjir kuḥlī) with dark blue trimming (ṭarz zarqāʾ).
