Princeton Geniza Project description: Engagement document between Esther bt. Yaʿaqov ʿAdda and Se. Yosef Fīḥa(?) (פיחה), listing a variety of conditions for their marriage (Join: Matthew Dudley). The prospective groom's mother, Dīna, figures prominently in the legal arrangements because she and Yosef both commit to residing in Esther's father's household for a full year leading up to the wedding. Dīna is mentioned by name in ll. 17 and 42, and indirectly in line 37. She appoints a certain Moshe al-Gāzī to sign the engagement deed on her behalf (he also appears in AIU VII.D.100- PGPID 30594). Dated in the lower section of the join: 5604 AM (1843/1844 CE). Location: Cairo, based on the reference to the "minhag of the city, here Miṣrayīm" in line 41. The bride's father will supply a dowry of "no less than five thousand gurush" which, combined with trousseau and jewelry items, brings the document's total valuation to 40,000 gurush. The conditions are extensive, in part discussing how the bride's father commits to purchase an enslaved woman (שפחה) who will prepare food in the married couple's household. There are also a variety of conditions about future housing plans and the timing of the wedding. The scribal hand changes in line 28 of the document. Throughout the first section of the document, the initial scribe's spellings are erratic. Even after the second scribe took over the document there are still some clear mistakes: e.g. הקלס instead of הקנס. The extent of these errors raises the question of whether they led to the document being torn in half and voided (unless this paper damage occurred later in a geniza chamber). MCD.
