תיאור

מכתב מסחרי, שנשלח ככל הנראה מאלכסנדריה לפוסטאט. הנמען הוא אבו עמראן מוסא, ואולי מדובר במשה בן אבו אלחי ח'לילה. תיארוך: בערך 1100 לספירה. השולח מאשר את קבלת מכתבו של הנמען בעניין המסטיק (שרף עץ) שהיה בביתו של הקאצ'י ואשר נמכר. השולח כתב לאבו אלח'יר סלאמה בן סעיד וביקש ממנו לגבות את התמורה. הנמען הזכיר את המצב בנוגע לאלום (צריף), דבר שגרם צער לשולח. הוא אומר: "עד היום אף אחד מן הביזנטים ואף אחד מן הרוקחים אינו קונה אותו." השווקים גרועים. הביזנטים אינם קונים דבר. הוונציאנים מכרו את הפלפל שהביאו תמורת שלושה טארי (רבע דינר סיציליאני) למשא. השנה לא הגיעו סוחרים מקונסטנטינופול. השנה הביזנטים ייבאו רק יין, גבינה, דבש, שמן ומעט מסטיק. עדיין אין ידיעות מהימנות על הספינות מן המגרב, אך נראה שהפליגו. על הנמען לדבר עם אבו אלח'יר סלאמה ולגרום לו לאסוף את השעורה מן המומחה ולמכור אותה. השולח מתלונן על עניין כלשהו הקשור באבו אלבשר. דרישות שלום לשר השרים (=מבורך בן סעדיה). נראה שהמכתב הסתיים במקור בנקודה זו. בהמשך מוסיף השולח: "הגיעו סוחרים מבנגאזי (ברניק) עם הידיעה שכל הספינות יצאו לדרך." דרישות שלום לאנשים שונים. ישנו סכסוך בין המגרבים לבין משפחת בן נחום הנכבדה מאלכסנדריה. מופיע משפט חידתי: "להם ראש אחד, ואילו לנו מאה ראשים." מוזכר אדם בשם יעקב בן ע'ליינה(?). בשוליים מוזכרים "אביתר וחבריו", ככל הנראה הכוונה לאביתר בן אליהו הכהן. Princeton Geniza Project description: Commercial letter, probably sent from Alexandria to Fustat. The addressee is Abū ʿImrān Mūsā, possibly Moshe b. Abū l-Ḥayy Khalīla. Dating: ca. 1100 CE. The sender acknowledges receipt of the addressee's letter concerning the mastic, which was in the house of the qāḍī, and which was sold. The sender had written to Abū l-Khayr Salāma b. Saʿīd asking him to collect it. The addressee had mentioned the situation with the alum, which distressed the sender. He says "to this day none of the Byzantines and none of the druggists are buying it." The markets are poor. The Byzantines are buying nothing at all. The Venetians have sold the pepper which they brought for three ṭaris (a Sicilian quarter-dinar) a load. No traders have arrived this year from Constantinople. This year the Byzantines have imported only wine, cheese, honey, oil, nad a little bit of mastic. There is still no reliable news concerning the ships from the Maghrib, but it seems that they have set sail. The addressee is to talk to Abū l-Khayr Salāma and hae him collect the barley from the Mumḥe and sell it. The sender complains about something to do with Abū l-Bishr. Greetings to Sar ha-Sarim (=Mevorakh b. Saʿadya). It seems that the letter originally ended here. The sender later adds: "Traders have arrived from Benghazi (Barnīq) with the news that all of the ships have set out." Greetings to various people. There is a dispute between the Maghribīs and the prominent Alexandrian Ben Naḥum family. There is an enigmatic sentence "they have a single head, while we have 100 heads." Refers to somebody called Yaʿaqov b. Ghulayna(?). In the margin mentions "Evyatar and his companions," presumably referring to Evyatar b. Eliyyahu ha-Kohen. (Information in part from Frenkel.
