Princeton Geniza Project description: Letter from ʿAwāḍ b. Ḥananʾel, from Alexandria, to Nahray b. Nissim, Fustat. Dating: ca. 1060 (Gil). Discusses prices of wheat and fava beans and a shipment of nuts and oil. ʿAwāḍ had just returned from a journey to the countryside in the region of Alexandria, as opposed to other letters in which he had just returned from Fustat. ʿAwāḍ mainly writes to Nahray from outside Fustat, but occasionally Nahray writes from Alexandria to ʿAwāḍ in Fustat. One purpose of trips into the countryside was to acquire basic provisions such as wheat and fava beans for personal purposes or for family consumption, but acquisitions were also made for resale and profit; ʿAwaḍ mentions that Nahray had instructed him to acquire 2 dinars' worth of wheat, and these were for resale, since ʿAwāḍ says, "I will not charge you for the loss." Between ʿAwwāḍ's departure from the countryside and his return to Alexandria, wheat supplies increased drastically, driving down the price, a fact of which, much to his consternation, he had been unaware. ʿAwaḍ is unhappy because he overpaid for the wheat approximately ⅓ dinar per irdabb, or approximately 20%. Unlike wheat, the price of fava beans seems, at least according to the report of this letter, to have risen considerably from 4½ irdabb per dinar to 1 per dinar, a dramatic fluctuation that should be carefully checked for possible alternative meanings and interpretations. ʿAwāḍ mentions that he had used all his cash to buy wheat and asks Nahray to send him money urgently. He also mentions the matter of a leaky cistern, probably one attached to a house or building in Alexandria belonging to Nahray. This suggests that they may have been sharing a residence in Alexandria, at least part-time. Although Gil dates this letter speculatively to the 1060s, Udovitch dates it later, since ʿAwaḍ sends greetings to Abū Saʿd, Nahray's son Nissim b. Nahray, who, Udovitch surmises, must have been a grown man or nearly so by this time; this would place this letter in the mid-1070s at the earliest.
