תיאור

מכתב מחלפון בן נתנאל, שנשלח מעידאב לאחיו עלי בן נתנאל בפוסטאט. לפי גיל המכתב נכתב בשנת 1132, ולפי גויטיין ופרידמן בסוף הקיץ או בסתיו של שנת 1131. חלפון נמצא בדרכו חזרה למצרים לאחר מסע לא־מוצלח להודו. הוא כותב לאחיו, שמשמש דיין בפוסטאט, על עסקיו ועל אכזבתו מכך שהמסחר לא התנהל כמצופה. חלפון מתאר את הצרות שהיה נתון בהן במהלך שהותו בעידאב, ומציין כי התעכב משום שמחיר בהמות המשא היה יקר ובידיו נותר ממון מועט בלבד, לאחר שהוציא חלקים נרחבים מהונו על תשלומי מכס יבוא בתימן (בדרכו מזרחה). בנוסף, חלפון מתאר בפירוט אירוע שהתרחש בתימן, שבו היה מעורב בוויכוח בין בני הקהילה היהודית המקומית בנוגע לסמכותו של הגאון (מצליח גאון מישיבת ארץ ישראל). הוויכוח הסתיים בהשפלתו של חלפון, והוא כותב עד כמה הוא נפגע מן האירוע ומבקש מאחיו, המקורב מאוד לגאון, לדבר עמו על כך. Princeton Geniza Project description: IB IV, 4 (ח10). Letter from Ḥalfon b. Netanel, ‘Aydhab, to his brother ʿElī b. Netanʾel, Fustat, 1132 (Gil) or end of summer or fall 1131 (Goitein/Friedman). Ḥalfon is on his way back to Egypt after an unsuccessful journey to India. He writes to his brother, a judge in Fustat, concerning his business and his disappointment that it did not go as expected. He refers to the troubles he has faced during his stay in Aydhab and writes that he is delayed because pack animals were costly and he had little money after spending large portions of his capital on import fees in Yemen (on his way east). He also describes in detail an event that happened in Yemen when he was a part of an argument between members of the Jewish community there, about the Gaon's authority (Masliah Gaon from the yeshiva of Palestine), which led to Ḥalfon's humiliation. He writes how hurt he is and asks his brother, who is very close to the gaon, to talk with him about it.
